How to dress with self confidence

While it's nice to think that appearances don't matter, the fact is that you clothes can have an effect on your self-confidence. That said, the only important thing is how you feel about the clothing you wear, not what others may think about it. Dress in a way that makes you feel confident and everything else will fall into place.

Finding your own style is a great way to feel more confident about the clothes you wear. Look to fashion magazines, catalogues and your stylish friends and associates for inspiration, but then create a look that's entirely your own.

Whether you prefer a tailored look or a hippie bohemian style, whatever makes you feel comfortable with yourself is the right choice.

There are times when you'll need to ignore this personal style and wear clothes that are appropriate for a certain occasion. When you're faced with such an event, or even if you have to do it every day for your job, find a way to make the required dress work for you, perhaps by adding your own style with subtle accessories. And if you just can't think of a way to feel comfortable in a tuxedo or the lime green bridesmaid dress your friend selected, draw confidence from the fact that everyone around you feels the same way.

When it comes to clothes, the most important thing is to wear items that make you feel confident and avoid everything else. If you have a shirt that clings to your stomach and makes you feel incredibly fat, then the obvious answer is to not wear that shirt anymore. Too many people would continue to wear the shirt and feel their self-confidence drop every time they put it on. Find pieces that work with your body type and your best natural attributes. If you're not sure how to do it, ask your most stylish friend or family member or find a full-service clothing store.

If you feel like your body type gets in the way of looking your best, maybe you're just not making the best choices. Don't be embarrassed about shopping in the "Women's" department, the "Petite" section or a "Big and Tall" store if that's where you'll find the clothing that fits you best. If you're accustomed to buying your clothes at discount stores, investing in some more expensive but high-quality pieces can result in a better fit because of the better craftsmanship.

Support garments like control-top pantyhose can improve your silhouette and the way you feel about yourself.

Jewelry can add to a polished look. Select pieces that complement and mesh with your chosen style. Don't forget other details as well when you choose accessories. A stylish hat or a fun pair of shoes can bring it all together.

Glasses are another issue when it comes to accessorizing. Some people hate the idea of wearing glasses because they think they look too bookish or it makes them feel old to need reading glasses. Contacts or laser eye surgery may be a suitable option if the idea of wearing glasses is that hateful and detrimental to self-confidence. Alternately, some use their need to wear glasses as an opportunity to show their fashion sense. They choose stylish or trendy frames that complement their faces and improve their confidence in their overall appearance.

Now you're sure to run into people along the way who just want to bring you down. They may scoff at your personal style or your lack of designer clothing or any other detail they can think of to make them feel better about themselves.

Know that this will happen and prepare for it. Whether you want to create snappy comebacks ahead of time or you just want to brace yourself for an insult, being prepared will keep the hateful words from sinking in and affecting the way you feel about your dress. If you're facing these attacks regularly, it may be time to find a new group of friends, remove yourself from the situation, or whatever would lead to a happier you.

The saying, "Clothes make the man" may or may not be true, but with the right choices, clothes can make or break your self-confidence.
